Plot

Official Description

The Animorphs and Ax have to make the most important decision they've ever had to make: Do they continue to fight the Yeerks in secret, or is it time to let everyone know there is a resistance? That the Animorphs exist. And that Earth does stand a small chance against the invasion.

Jake knows that either choice is a major one. Not one that some kid should be responsible for. But he's getting tired of the pressure. So, even though he realizes that other Animorphs need him to be strong, he doesn't feel that way. In fact, he feels just the opposite. And Jake knows if he starts to lose it the Animorphs are done...

Plot Summary

Jake comes home from an Animorphs meeting during a storm. His mother asks him to clean the basement while she takes Homer to the vet. While cleaning, Jake finds a chest that belonged to his Grandpa G's great great granduncle, Isaiah Fitzhenry. Tom comes home, and Jake talks to him. Tom leaves once again, and Jake hears him say "Preparations." Around 4:00 in the morning, Jake gets a phone call from Cassie asking him to come to the Hork-Bajir valley. When Jake reaches the valley, the other Animorphs have already arrived. Toby explains that one of the free Hork-Bajir had been captured on a raid. Jake attempts to convince everyone to evacuate before the Yeerks arrive, and save a bloodbath, but almost everyone is against him, with the exception of Tobias.

Jake draws a map of the valley in the dirt, saying that they should fight away from the camp. Tobias reports that there is a group of campers in the Yeerks' way. The Animorphs discover a beaver dam, and each acquire a beaver. Jake and Tobias leave the others who are working on the dam so they could flood the valley when the Yeerks attack. They go to the campers and explain that if they didn't leave or fight, they would be infested or die. Most of the campers (who turn out to be Trekkies on an annual trip) come with Jake and Tobias to fight. They are greeted by Toby and a group of other free Hork-Bajir. Toby tells Jake she knew that the campers would help out.

The attack begins when Blue Band Hork-Bajir enter the camp, where the Hork-Bajir are hidden in the trees. They almost leave until they spot the free Hork-Bajir. The battle continues when Taxxons and Visser One attack. Tobias is hit by Visser One's morph's tentacle when he tries to attack. Jake takes Tobias' place, biting one of the Visser's necks. Jake is nearly burned to death when the stored water at the beaver dam is released by Ax, who had been stationed there.

After the flood is ended, Jake sees Rachel get to her feet, and Toby's little brother crawls out from under her. Marco and Cassie come to Jake, sporting injuries from fighting. Jake returns home just in time for lunch.

Major/Highlighted Events

  • Jake, Rachel and Cassie have stopped attending school regularly, instead opting to focus on preventing the Yeerks' attempt at open warfare.
  • The Animorphs debate whether they should expose their powers and reveal their identities to the world.
  • Toby Hamee discloses that one of the free Hork-Bajir has been captured and infested and that the Yeerks are coming to the valley; however, Toby refuses to evacuate her people, citing that they must stay and defend their home.
  • Jake formulates a strategy which requires the Animorphs using beaver morphs to create a dam, which they would destroy in order to flood the Yeerks out of the valley.
  • The Animorphs have managed to update their morphing outfits by being able to morph jeans, which Jake accredits to the sheer experience they have had morphing.
  • Jake and Tobias demonstrate their powers and disclose the existence of the Yeerks to a group of human campers in the area, who happen to be Star Trek fans. One of the adults, a man named Richard Carpenter, believes Jake and Tobias to be aliens of the Federation and offers his help to defend the Hork-Bajir, unable to grasp the seriousness of the conflict, and is killed in the ensuing battle.
  • Visser One reuses the same eight-headed morph he used during his first battle against the Animorphs in The Invasion.
  • The Animorphs succeed in flooding the valley, although the Hork-Bajir are forced to flee from the valley and relocate to the neighboring hills.
  • It is revealed that Jara Hamee and Ket Halpak have conceived another child.

Trivia

  • The cover quote is, "What would you do if you lost your mind ... to a Yeerk?"
  • The inside cover quote is, "Busy as a beaver...."
  • This book was released at the same time as The Ellimist Chronicles.
  • This is the sixth instance in the series where an Animorph acquires a morph that they do not morph into in the same book and the third instance where an Animorph acquires a morph they never use, as well as the second instance of Tobias doing so. Tobias acquires a North American beaver in this book, but does not morph the beaver in this book or any subsequent books. Tobias also acquired a mountain goat morph in The Reunion while Jake acquired a termite in The Secret that they never ended up morphing into.
  • This marks the eighth and final time that the Chee pose for the Animorphs while they are on a mission.

Goofs/Inconsistencies

  • Jake's mother informs Jake that if he cleans the basement he may use it as a space to relax with his friends, despite the fact that she should be aware that his childhood best friend, Marco, has been "killed" by an intruder. Marco adds in The Revelation that the police were conducting an 'investigation' into the 'homicide' to assuage the neighbors' concerns, and previous books such as The Alien establishes that Jake lives in the same neighborhood.
  • On p46, Ax's line ends with a quotation mark, despite the fact that he is using thought-speak.
  • "Desperate" is misspelled as "desparate" on p71.
  • After hearing Richard Carpenter mentioned "the Federation", Tobias tells Jake that they must be fans of Star Wars. However, Tobias is aware of Star Trek and the Federation in particular, having mentioned the Federation and his thoughts on the show in The Proposal.
  • Ket Halpak's surname is misspelled as "Halpek" on p137.
